As the Director of Recruiting for First Command, I’ve found military experience is a strong leading indicator for success. Transitioning military servicemembers tend to have the right combination of intangible qualities we look for in candidates – traits like a strong work ethic, a character worthy of trust and a willingness to be coached.
Many companies like ours recognize the value veterans bring to the table, and will train them to fill in the gaps.
First Command hires and trains individuals who have the qualities listed above to become Financial Advisors. We’re looking for entrepreneurial folks with a desire to work with and serve others. Over 70% of our Financial Advisors are career changers with a successful military background and/or strong military affiliation. Most of our Advisors serve military markets, leveraging their knowledge of military benefits and the military lifestyle.
Many of you may not have considered a career as a Financial Advisor, but we have successful Advisors from all different walks of life and backgrounds: mechanical engineers, sales professionals and nurses to name a few. So don’t feel boxed in by your current skills set. You have options!
If you’re transitioning from the military – or thinking about transitioning – I encourage you to consider all of the possibilities and the pros and cons before making any final decisions. Do you want to continue on a career path similar to your current role? Do you want to start a business or try something new? For some, more control over their time and income potential are deciding factors. If that appeals to you, a Financial Advisor career may be a match.
